“The idea for this community engagement music project had been brewing for a very long time - because after every performance or event I’ve been involved with over my career, audience members want to share why music is meaningful to them, about the songs that have been part of their lives. So it’s such a thrill to be premiering this work at Frankston Arts Centre for South Side Festival!”

The first ever outing of this new work - where musicians collaborate with local community members to explore the music of their lives - brings together participants from age 17 to 76, and includes some who have always lived in Frankston and those that moved here more recently. “It’s multigenerational, it’s local and global, but what everyone has in common is that everyone has stories about their relationship to music,” Mama reflects.

Remixing interviews and stories from real community members own voices with live performances of the songs that they hold dear, it’s going to be a night to remember.

South Side Festival, presented by Frankston Arts Centre, highlights what a vibrant cultural and artistic hub Frankston is, with an annual series of exciting events and experiences. Now in its second year, the festival runs from Friday 5 to Sunday 14 May 2023 - and you can catch Mama Alto’s performance of “That Song Changed My Life” on Friday 12 May.

Tickets are now on sale.

South Side Festival is supported by Frankston City Council and sponsored EastLink.
