Event Description

Come sit with me and my typewriter and I shall type a poem for your soul. Shhh...’

Part side show, part arty spiritual reading, type-a-poet is a one-on-one performance art experience like no other.

Set in a pop-up Temple of Poetry, type-a-poet is a live co-creation with its audience, one visitor at a time. In complete silence for ten intimate minutes, you will be transported to another realm, with a personalised inked gift for you to keep at the end.

Award-winning performer/writer Andi Snelling combines her love of vintage typewriters with improvised word wizardry, while incorporating access in innovative ways, in this magical, meditative experience that heals the heart, bends the mind and explodes time.

type-a-poet is accessible for: wheelchair users, blind and low vision folks, and D/deaf and HoH folks, ages 10+. It is a relaxed performance environment with sensory objects for extra comfort.

Andi is a sensitive artist, adept at reading the room and adjusting her performance to the needs of her audience. She will do her best to make your experience as special and comfortable as possible.

type-a-poet is a one-on-one performance art experience, done entirely in silence. Please honour this silence to the best of your ability. The experience lasts 10 minutes.

The Temple of Poetry, which you enter via an opening in a hanging curtain, is a tailor-made, pop-up venue comprising black curtains, approximately 2.5m x 3m in size. It is located in the corner of the Frankston Arts Centre foyer, directly to your left as you enter the main front entrance.

Inside, it is a quiet, calm atmosphere with low lighting. The only sound is from the typewriter and any noise from the outside world.

The seating is cushions on a floor covered in rugs, or chairs at a table, should you prefer this option. Comfortable space will be created for anyone in a wheelchair or using other mobility aids.

The opening in the curtain will be opened for you when your session is ready to begin. Once you’ve entered the space and settled in, Andi will connect with you in silence, then type up an original poem for your soul. This poem will be gifted to you at the end of the experience and is yours to keep. You will then be guided out of the space after 10 minutes.

A Frankston Arts Centre Front of House staff member will be nearby outside the Temple of Poetry, in the main foyer area, to assist you, should you need it.

On display outside the Temple of Poetry is:

  • simple written instructions in Easy English and Braille
  • a description of what The Temple looks like in Braille
  • a Sensory Board displaying samples of objects and materials from the Temple of Poetry for you to enjoy touching prior to your experience; consider this a mini Tactile Tour!
  • simple instructions via audio by pushing the large yellow button on the Sensory Board

Although a one-on-one experience, companion card holders, support people and assistance dogs are welcome to join.

Babes in arms are also welcome to join.

This experience is appropriate for ages 10+. Should any child wish for their parent to be present with them in The Temple, this is also welcome.

Enjoy type-a-poet.

Reviews

“Snelling has never met a form of performance beyond her. Typically atypical and always surprising… one of those crystalline encounters that linger far longer than events 10 times its duration." - The Age

"Precious few experiences are as unique as this one. It'll change your life. Ethereal, other-worldly... A series of surreal and honest moments. I felt seen. Studied. Accepted." - Weekend Notes

"It's shows like type-a-poet that make festivals exciting. This is a unique experience that is yours and yours alone. 24 hours after my visit to the Temple of Poetry I read my poem and continue to be amazed at how much the silence between us speaks volumes on paper. The finished product displays Snelling's skills as a performer, a writer/poet and her uncanny ability to understand people and really see them." - My Melbourne Arts
