Small Changes Big Impact: Starting your low-waste journey
Friday 9 May, 10:30am - 12:00pm
Living a lower waste lifestyle is something that many Australians are keen to do, as it becomes increasingly obvious that our daily choices directly affect the environment. But when faced with the over-abundance of information available, it can be cripplingly overwhelming to know where, and how, to begin.
This free face-to-face presentation is designed to help City of Frankston residents explore solutions to reduce waste output by making informed decisions when they shop. She’ll discuss practical examples of how to buy, store and use different household consumables, and showcase some of the ways we do this. Participants will go home with a "shopping audit" template to assist them in making future decisions, as well as a resources & supplier list of low-waste alternatives to their shopping needs.
Low-waste food gardening workshop
Saturday 10 May, 10:00am - 12:00pm
With the cost-of-living crisis continuing and supermarket prices increasing weekly, it’s become more important than ever to consider alternatives to buying fresh produce. It’s often been joked that growing your own tomatoes is the best way to spend 6 months and a week’s wages to harvest $2.27 worth of produce, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
Join permaculture and sustainability educator, Anna The Urban Nanna, for a hands-on presentation-workshop where you’ll learn about frugal, waste-savvy ways to access healthy soil, plants, seeds, fertiliser and mulch. Then have a go at making some upcycled items to use around the garden.
Whether you’ve got a ‘green thumb’ or a ‘brown thumb’, this presentation & workshop is designed to help you see gardening through a new lens: one where it’s possible to obtain a yield while producing no waste and saving money in the process.
Catch and Store: How to dehydrate food
Friday 16 May, 10:00am - 12:00pm
One of the oldest, simplest ways of preserving food is to dehydrate it. Not only does it allow you to catch and store nutrition while it’s in abundance for use in leaner times, but it can be achieved in a wide range of lo-tech ways with very little financial input.
This free face-to-face workshop presentation will take you through some of the simplest and most effective ways to dehydrate different types of foods. This is a fabulous session for people wanting to get into ‘homesteading’ or permaculture living, but who don’t have capacity to grow much of their own food just yet. Includes taste-testers of differently dehydrated foods; a display of useful books and resources; and you’ll have a chance to make a special blend of dehydrated food to take home.
Join permaculture and sustainability educator, Anna The Urban Nanna, in this workshop presentation where you’ll learn the ins and outs of dehydrating, and have a go at making a waste-savvy dehydrated seasoning blend to take home.
